David Potter’s Reflections: “grinding out” of a win

This was a traditional January “grinding out” of a win. We got there in the end, but it was a struggle. Indeed, the first half was one of the poorest 45 minutes that I can recall from a Celtic side for many years, and the penalty conceded was, frankly, unprofessional from a player of whom we expect a lot better. He was rightly substituted, and of course it was the introduction of Leigh Griffiths which made all the difference.

Not only did Griffiths score the goal that won the game – scored through determination and grit rather than any great vision – but it was his actual presence that inspired the others particularly James Forrest who had a great second half and did not enjoy the best of luck on occasion. Not only that, but the players who had had a poor first half, not least our central defensive pairing of Ajer and Boyata, came on to a good game in the second half. Ajer in particular was distinctly lacking in confidence in the first half, but picked up well.

Scott Sinclair seems to have turned the corner as well. He is such a talented player and we have missed so much of his thrilling runs, crosses and goals. Callum McGregor has still to come back to what he can be, but Scott Brown remains the great inspirational player that we know that he is.

Odsonne Edouard is not actually a bad player, but as someone put it kindly, he is “a work in progress”. Griffiths is far better, and really he should start more games. Which brings us to the tedious saga of Mousse Dembele. Thank heaven this transfer window nonsense has only a week to run! Please sort it out, Celtic! Either sell him and have done with it, or keep him and play him! It is difficult to see what good keeping him on the bench does for anyone. Brendan was charming in answering the difficult questions, but he certainly dodged them. What is this all about?

Partick Thistle had their moments, and I can’t really see them getting relegated. They defended well in the first half. Nice to see that some of them are “well connected” as well, Mr Keown being the son of a famous father.

The referee, Mr Beaton, got most things right. I tend to think that he is one of the better ones. I would have hated to see Lustig red carded for the penalty, but Lustig should have known a lot better, and Celtic’s penalty was a stone-waller.

The TV coverage had its moments. Liked the way Kieran Tierney brought down his Boss, and did you see Leigh Griffiths trying to see what Brendan was writing down in the first half. A few weak jokes throughout the commentary by gentlemen who will never earn their livelihood in stand-up comedy. And Chris Sutton who a few weeks ago was urging Celtic not to settle for £18 million for Dembele, now wants him to stay!

And so to Hibs on Saturday. We will have to play better and in particular to start better. The first half was very quiet with even our supporters not having a lot to say. Let’s have some fire on Saturday, Celtic!

What about the linesman (asst referee) giving Griffiths offside from a shy? We should remember how young most of our team are.

Agree with all your comments. (I usually do but this is my first time saying so)
No mention of NCham who was better than the rest in the first half. 49 Passes for first goal but surely 40 were sideways and 9 should have been more than enough. Am I the only one bored by the constant sideways passing especially at the beginning of a match. Methinks we need to be quicker and more direct at passing through teams.

First “goal had 49 passes ” was against Brechin I thought that should be made clear apologies for any confusion but my point about sideways etc is I think valid regardless of who we are playing
